Just one case of communal  violence in UP in 2021: NCRB report

Wednesday, 31 August 2022 | PNS | Lucknow

In what appears to be a major achievement for Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, just one case of communal violence was reported in the state in 2021, as against 100 cases in Jharkhand, 77 in Maharashtra and 22 in Rajasthan, according to the latest National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB) report for the year 2021.

According to the report, the downward trend in serious crimes such as rape and murder also continued in the state with UP ranking 23rd in rape with 2,845 cases and 24th in murder with 3,717 cases among 28 states and right union territories.

Besides, UP ranks 28th in crime against children with 16,838 cases and 36th in kidnapping for ransom with 50 cases despite being the most populous state in the country, a government spokesman said on Tuesday evening.

“A total of 4,28,278 cases of crime against women were registered in India in 2021, showing an increase of 15.3 per cent over 2020. A total of 1,49,404 cases of crime against children were registered in 2021, showing an increase of 16.2 per cent over 2020,” he said.

The conviction rate in UP is also the highest in most crimes in the country, according to the NCRB report. In conviction of criminals in cases against women, cyber crime, seizure of arms and arrests under IPC, UP topped among the 36 states and UTs, thanks to the zero tolerance policy towards crime of the Yogi government.

According to the NCRB data, crimes against women and children in UP in 2021 dropped by 6.2 per cent and 11.11 per cent, respectively, as compared to 2019. In the year 2019, as many as 59,853 cases of crime against women were registered in UP, as compared to 56,083 in 2021. Similarly, 18,943 cases for crime against children were registered in 2019 as against 16,838 in 2021.

“The sharp decline in crime cases can be attributed to CM Yogi’s initiatives to empower both women and children through schemes like Mission Shakti, Mukhyamantri Kanya Sumangala Yojana and Bal Seva Yojana,” the government spokesman claimed.

Cybercrime also dropped significantly in Uttar Pradesh  from 11,416 cases in 2019 to 88,29 in 2021.

In terms of conviction rate, Uttar Pradesh is on top. As many as 7,713 were convicted in UP in crime cases against women, 292 in cybercrime, 40,212 in  seizure of arms cases and 1,12,800 under IPC.
