Four members of a family were killed when their car fell into a 20 feet deep water-filled abandoned stone quarry in Sarangarh-Bhilaigarh district in Chhattisgarh, police said on Friday.
The incident took place near Timarlaga village on the Raigarh-Sarangarh road when the victims were returning from a temple in Odisha on Thursday night, Sarangarh-Bhilaigarh Additional Superintendent of Police Maheshwar Nag said.
Those killed were identified as Meenu Patel (35), sarpanch of Timarlaga panchayat, her husband Mahendra (40) and father-in-law Phool Singh (65) and mother-in-law Parwati (60).
As per preliminary information, Mahendra, who was driving the car, lost control over the steering while reversing, resulting in the tragedy.
Patel’s daughter Roshni (15) managed to come out of the car as the window of her side opened and she swam to safety. She tried to rescue her grandfather but he slipped into deep waters and drowned. Three others remained stuck inside the vehicle which submerged in the water, the officer said.
