One woman from Maharashtra died on the spot while six were injured when debris fell on the jeep they were travelling in from Gaurikund to Sonprayag in Rudraprayag district on Wednesday. The accident took place near Munkatiya when rocks and debris fell on the jeep. Three of the six injured persons were hurt seriously in the accident. Meanwhile, with rains being experienced in various parts of the State, at least 40 roads are blocked in various districts due to debris and other factors.
A total of 10 persons were travelling in the Max jeep from Gaurikund to Sonprayag when the mishap occurred. According to sources, pilgrims from Maharashtra, Bihar and Nepal were returning from Kedarnath and travelling from Gaurikund to Sonprayag in a jeep on Wednesday. The jeep had travelled about two kilometres when it was hit by rocks and debris falling from the mountain at Munkatiya. All the occupants of the vehicle were stuck in it. On being informed about the mishap, personnel of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and police reached the accident site to rescue the injured passengers. Pushpa Mohan Bhonsle (62) a resident of Ahmednagar in Maharashtra died on the spot due to being crushed inside the vehicle. The rescue team had to cut a portion of a vehicle in order to remove her body. Out of the six injured, the three seriously injured persons were referred to the district hospital in Rudraprayag while the others were admitted in community health centre in Sonprayag for treatment.
Meanwhile, according to information provided by the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) at least 40 roads were blocked in various parts of the State on Wednesday evening. Three rural motor roads were blocked in Chamoli district while one rural motor road was blocked in Almora district. One main district road and one rural motor road was blocked in Dehradun district, two rural motor roads were blocked in Champawat, three rural motor roads were blocked in Tehri whereas in Bageshwar district the Balighat-Daufad-Kotmaniya and Bageshwar-Kapkot- Aso State highways, Buyain-Gadera, Bhani-Harsigiya-Bagad main district road were blocked by debris in addition to 13 rural motor roads. Similarly, the Thal-Munsyari State highway and Tawaghat-Ghatiyabagarh border road are blocked by debris in addition to 11 rural motor roads blocked in Pithoragarh district.
