Congress releases fourth list of 61 candidates

The Congress, which is going it alone in the UP assembly polls, released a fourth list of 61 candidates on Sunday.

In this list, 24 candidates are women. Congress has announced to give 40 per cent reservation to women in the polls to 403 seats of UP assembly.

All India Congress Committee secretary KC Venugopal released the fourth list of 61 candidates on Sunday for the third, fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh phases of UP polls.

Eight Muslims and 12 Brahmins figure in the fourth list. 

Prominent women given tickets in the fourth list are Rita Maurya from Ayodhya, Karishma Thakur from Govindnagar, Hemlata Patel from Ayahshah in Fatehpur, Vinita Devi from Kannauj, Chandni from Sri Nagar, Vandana Bhargava from Biswan, Shabiha Khatoon from Khalilabad, Shikha Pandey from Bilaspur, Jitendri Devi from Dhaurahra, Sudha Dwivedi from Sareni, Shakunlata Devi from Kaimganj, and Archana Rathore from Bhojpur.

The candidates fielded include Raj Kumari. who will be contesting from Hamirpur, Pawan Devi Kori will be in the fray from Naraini, Geeta Singh from Kaiserganj, Savita Pandey from Tarabganj, Kamla Sisodia from Mankapur.

Other names include Dulari Devi from Salempur, Dr Omlata from Rasara, Sonam Bind from Bairia, Aarti Singh from Badlapur, Geeta Devi from Marihan, and Videshwari Singh Rathore from Ghorawal.

Notably, women candidates have figured prominently in the list of Congress candidates so far as party general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has committed that the party will field 40 per cent of women candidates in the Uttar Pradesh election.

The first list of 125 candidates included 50 women candidates, the second list of 41 candidates has 16 women candidates and the third list of 89 candidates included 37 women candidates. The party has so far announced candidates for 316 seats out of which 127 tickets have been given to women

In Uttar Pradesh, Congress and party incharge of UP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra are emphasising on women. The party has adopted the "MY" factor comprising Mahila and youth.

Meanwhile, Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Saturday accused the Prayagraj administration of stopping the release of her party's manifesto for youths while taking no action against Bharatiya Janata Party leaders allegedly indulging in making hate speeches. She also accused the Election Commission of India of “crushing” democracy, allegedly in collusion with local administration.

"The BJP leaders campaigned with crowds and talked hateful things. The administration, however, did not take any action. But the Congress party was stopped from releasing its youth manifesto in Prayagraj today," Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said in a tweet in Hindi.

"Under the pressure of the government, the Election Commission of India and administration are engaged in crushing democracy and the agenda of the youth. (Is it) fair?" she asked in her tweet.
