Alleging Chandigarh Deputy Mayor Anup Gupta of filing a “false affidavit”, Chandigarh Congress unit on Saturday filed a petition before the UT Deputy Commissioner to declare the election from ward no 11 as null and void.
Moving the petition, Chandigarh Congress district president Rajiv Kumar Moudgil urged the Deputy Commissioner, the prescribed authority of UT Chandigarh, to declare the election from ward no 11 as null and void in view of a false affidavit filed by Anup Gupta — the BJP Councillor and Deputy Mayor of the city, before the Returning Officer in December 2021.
Moudgil was Congress candidate from ward no 11 in the recently-concluded Municipal Corporation election.
Chandigarh Congress president Subhash Chawla, addressing the media at Congress Bhawan, said that not only the elections from ward no. 11 be countermanded, Anup Gupta should also be prosecuted against for filing a false affidavit before the State Election Commission.
“Anup Gupta enrolled himself as an advocate in 2007 under the Punjab and Haryana Bar Council. He filed an affidavit before the Council under rule 47 of the Bar Council Rules to the effect that after being enrolled as an advocate, he would not personally engage in any business activity. Now, on December 3, 2021, he swore an affidavit before the returning officer stating on oath that he is a businessman by occupation and declared his income from business,” he added.
