To reduce congestion and smoothen vehicular traffic flow, the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to shift the Unit-I vegetable wholesale market to Bhagabanpur on the outskirts of the city, where 10 acres of land has been identified for the purpose.
A cold storage and other facilities at Bhagabanpur would also be set up for the market, said a BMC official.
The vegetable traders’ association welcomed the move. “But there should be basic necessities like water, electricity and road connectivity in the proposed area,” said association president Kabiraj Swain,
Notably, the Unit-I vegetable wholesale market has been functioning on four acres of land since 1957. As many as 49 wholesale vendors are doing business in the market.
More than 200 trucks transport vegetables to the market, which is daily frequented by thousands of people from all over the city and its periphery. The vendors and locals have been demanding shifting of the market since long.
