Capt’s candidate wants to contest on BJP’s poll symbol

Sunday, 30 January 2022 | Monika Malik | Chandigarh

The candidates of Capt Amarinder Singh led Punjab Lok Congress are shying away from fighting the February 20 election on the party’s poll symbol — hockey stick and ball. Instead, they have expressed their desire to contest on the BJP’s poll symbol — the lotus. Now, Capt Amarinder may soon hold talks with the saffron party to discuss the issue.

Captain Amarinder, who stepped down as the chief minister about four months back, went on to float his own political outfit—Punjab Lok Congress — and tied up with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Shiromani Akali Dal (Sanyukty) to contest 2022 polls.

Now after arriving at seat allocation arrangement and distribution of tickets, at least six candidates of Punjab Lok Congress have refused to contest elections on the “lesser-known” party symbol — hockey stick and ball. They were demanding to contest polls on the BJP’s symbol which is much known among the people.

The demand was raised mainly by the candidates from the urban seats, where BJP is believed to have some stronghold. Now, Capt Amarinder is expected to take up the matter with the BJP top brass.

Among the candidates who have sought to contest on BJP’s poll symbol include Bathinda Urban, Ludhiana East, Ludhiana South, and Atmanagar seats. Apart from these, two more candidates are also demanding the same.
