In a bizarre incident, an eight-year-old ailing child was allegedly beaten to death by his father on Thursday night at Habeli Jenasahi village under the Nikirai police station in the district here.
Police detained the accused along with seizing the body and sending it for autopsy to the District Headquarters Hospital, informed Nikirai PS IIC Kadambini Parida.
Parida said Debu, son of Sunakar Jena, had been suffering from fever for last four days. Sunakar on Thursday had brought bread and fruits for Debu and asked him to eat them. But Debu declined. At this, Sunakar got berserk and went on assaulting the sick child. Though the family members, including Sunakar’s wife, requested him not to beat the child, but he did not listen to them.
Later, when Sunakar went to provide medicine to his ailing son, he found Debu to be lying unconscious. Soon, the family members took Debu to the Indupur CHC. However, though the doctor referred the boy to the District Headquarters Hospital, Kendrapada, given his serious condition, Debu died on the way.
The uncle of the deceased lodged an FIR on Friday at Nikirai police station in this regard. Nikirai police later registered a case under Section 302 of IPC against Sunakar.
The police were waiting for the autopsy report and would take action accordingly, said IIC Parida.
