‘Be conversant with judgments on NDPS Act’

State Commissioner of Excise Ashish Kumar Singh on Friday advised the Excise officers to go through the latest judgments of the High Courts and Supreme Court on NDPS Act to make such cases stronger.

 

Singh while inaugurating a one-day seminar on Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act organised by the Excise Directorate, Cuttack, through virtual mode, attended by the Excise officers of the State, gave the piece of advice.

 

Singh advised the Excise officers to participate proactively and implicate the law properly during search, seizure and investigation.  He instructed them to go through the latest judgments of the courts on NDPS Act.

 

The State Excise chief informed that with the accused persons resorting to new technology in illicit trafficking and changes in law, it is imperative for all to be conversant with them for observing the mandatory provisions of the Act and adducing evidence in court.

 

Public Prosecutor, Khordha, Sarat Chandra Samanta highlighted different provisions of the NDPS Act, the lacunae in filing papers, adducing evidence in the court of law and advised the Excise officers to follow the provisions strictly.

 

Deputy Superintendent of Police, STF, Bhubaneswar, Praveen Chandra Tripathy explained the provisions of pre-trial disposal of drugs and forfeiture proceeding under the NDPS Act.

 

Deputy Commissioner of Excise, Enforcement, Rama Chandra Mishra explained types of narcotics and psychotropic drugs and their abuse in the society.

 

EDC, Cuttack, Rajat Kumar Praharaj and consultant to Excise Commissioner Prasanna Kumar Acharya dwelt upon different provisions.

 

Joint Commissioner of Excise Rama Chandra Palata and Deputy Commissioners of Excise Dibyalochan Mohanta and Dambarudhar Khanda also participated in the seminar.

 

The Excise officers during interaction made queries in the doubt clearing session which were suitably explained. The Excise Commissioner at the conclusion of the seminar stressed upon conducting such seminars in each month and stated that steps are being taken to train all Excise officers in the coming days.
