Anguished and fuming, slogan-raising students laid siege to the Chandigarh University in Mohali district as a raunchy video scandal rocked the campus on Sunday, amidst unsubstantiated rumours of suicide attempts by eight hostlers after they, along with some 50 others, were allegedly filmed while taking a bath by a fellow student. The siege that began late on Saturday night soon after the surfacing of “leaked objectionable videos” continued till late on Sunday evening, even as the police-district administration and the varsity management made ineffective attempts to pacify hundreds of pushing and jostling students demanding that the varsity Vice-Chancellor (V-C) come forward to hold talks with them.
The protests continued even as the management and the Punjab Police assured them that the accused girl, who was promptly arrested by the police, had only shared her personal raunchy video with a male friend in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh. The youth was also arrested for sharing the “objectionable videos” of girl students on social media. His arrest came after the Punjab Police shared his mobile number, which was then tracked by the Shimla police and eventually led to his arrest from near his house in Rohru. Till the filing of this report, the accused was being detained by Shimla police, and would be handed over to the Punjab Police, which had already sent two police teams to the hill State.
However, the claim by the cops that only one girl’s video was leaked by her boyfriend on social media was rejected by the irate students, who described it as a “cover up”. Even as Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann ordered a probe into the matter, the university authorities claimed that no such incident took place.
