As the countdown to one of the most anticipated reunions of the year continues, HBO Max revealed the official teaser for the forthcoming Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts. In the HBO Max special, the series’ iconic characters and filmmakers reunite and reminisce about their adventures in the eight movies.
Around 4.9 million people watched the video around the world, but which moments truly captured the emotions of the people? Entropik’s Affect Lab platform to analyse the teaser and bring forth the emotional highs and lows of it. Facial coding and eye tracking technologies along with survey techniques were employed to decipher the expressions of the participants across genders and age groups while they watched the most awaited video this month.
Selective revelation and emotional words ensured great attention and engagement levels
The interesting thing to note here is that the attention level of the respondents remained stable at 67.67 per cent throughout the video. It is greater than the benchmark numbers and fares than most of the trailers launched in 2021. The engagement rate stood at 12.88 with dips and peaks in various places. The reason for the stability in attention and engagement levels can be a result of showcasing iconic things and places associated with Harry Potter, the selective reveal that intrigued the audience and the clear messaging of the cast, date and other key details.
The Affect Lab score for this teaser managed to garner a score of 37.17. The report also indicates that the intensity of negative emotions was higher than the intensity of positive emotions that is a result of the sadness captured since the audience was nostalgic throughout.
70 per cent of the audience rated the HP reunion teaser 5 out of 5
The teaser received a massive thumbs up from the audience with 70 per cent of them rating the teaser five out five. Around 18 per cent and 12 per cent of the people gave ratings of four and three respectively. It is one of the highest rated teasers in the recent times.
The first reaction to the teaser was ‘Can’t wait to watch’
The first reaction to the teaser for 42 per cent of the people was — ‘Wow! Can’t wait to watch the reunion’. More than 34 per cent of the audience felt ‘Nostalgic’ and were in the mood to revisit their school or college days when they spent a lot of time discussing Harry Potter with their friends. 12 per cent of them said they were speechless while another 12 per cent of them asked ‘Why recreate magic moments?’
Hermoine’s entry was the most emotionally engaging point
Hermoine or Emma Watson’s entry was the most emotionally engaging point. The attention and engagement levels peaked in the 18th second as the audience were curious to find if the mysterious woman walking on the 9 ¾ platform was Watson. The chance at getting a peak at one of the most loved characters in the Harry Potter series increased the curiosity, happiness as well as the nostalgic quotient among the respondents.
Neville Longbottom and Arthur Weasley's scenes captured the happiest of emotions
Neville Longbottom and Arthur Weasley's scenes captured the happiest of emotions. At 11 seconds where Longbottom is seen holding the legendary Hogwarts letter was one of the happiest moments of the teaser. The reason could be that he was the only student whose face is shown in the video. Another smile-inducing moment came in 15 seconds when Weasley can be seen on the Hogwarts Express. The sense of familiarity in seeing well known characters along with the trademark Harry Potter elements like the invitation and Hogwarts Express made people smile.
Words evoked more nostalgia and sadness than characters
The scenes that showcased text including the likes of ‘The invitation you have been waiting for’, Harry Potter logo and the cast names brought out the most negative expressions in people. But these negative emotions that are associated with nostalgia and sadness of seeing their favourite characters for one last time together after a long gap. Since Harry Potter movies are based on the books, the way the text was portrayed on screen triggered evocativeness.
Surprisingly, Hufflepuff was named the most favourite Hogwarts House
In an unexpected twist, 51 per cent of the respondents voted Hufflepuff as the house they wanted to belong to. Around 27 per cent of the audience said they would want to belong to Gryffindor. 16 per cent and six per cent of the people voted in favour of Ravenclaw and Slytherin, respectively.
Most popular characters were Harry, Hermione and Ron
There were no guesses in who the favourite characters were in this special reunion. Harry was voted the most popular character by a whopping 65 per cent of the respondents. Hermione and Ron came second and third, respectively. Apart from the trio, Lord Voldemort and Severus Snape also found a place in this list.
67 per cent of them said they will rebinge watch the series
The reunion teaser has rekindled the interest among Harry Potter fans who said they will binge watch the entire series again after watching the reunion. This proves that reunions are a good way to resell the original movies to the fans as well as a newer set of audience.
