Reviewing the preparations for the inauguration ceremony of the memorial at Sunam Udham Singh Wala along with Additional Chief Secretary (ACS), Tourism and Cultural Affairs, Sanjay Kumar and others, Sangrur Deputy Commissioner Ramvir said that the State Government has planned a state level function to dedicate the memorial to the people of the state.

Deputy Commissioner said that on this occasion, Cultural Affairs and Tourism Minister Charanjit Singh Channi, School Education and Public Works Minister Vijay Inder Singla, Punjab Mandi Board chairman Lal Singh apart from other dignitaries will also be arriving to pay their respects to the martyr. Apart from a copper statue of the martyr, the Shaheed Udham Singh Memorial — spread on four acres of land on Sunam-Mansa road — will include a museum, cafeteria, and other facilities for the preservation and exhibition of his relics.

The layout and design of the monument has been prepared by Punjab Chief Architect and for the convenience of the people, parking, green landscaping, pathways, traditional lights, and rain shelters have been constructed, said the Deputy Commissioner. He added that in addition to this, red sandstone has been used for the construction of the memorial and flower beds have been prepared in a circular design in front of the statue of the martyr. Ramvir said that Shaheed Udham Singh avenged the Jallianwala Bagh massacre after 21 years and was hanged on July 31, 1940, in a London jail.

He said that the history of the life of Shaheed Udham Singh has been engraved on the stones around the statue in Punjabi and English languages for the publicity of his heroic act.

“This memorial would emerge as a source of inspiration for future generations and would inspire the youth to serve the country wholeheartedly,” he added.
