The Commissionerate police on Wednesday arrested Deepak Nayak alias Shankar, the main accused in the sensational murder of Malgodown trader Mohhamad Farook Tayab in 2014.Shankar was on the run for the last seven years.
Commissioner of Police Soumendra Priyadarshi said Shankar, a resident of Ranihat Gopalasahi under the Mangalabag police station here was arrested from the railway station here while he was about to board a train to Chennai.
A pistol along with two rounds of live ammunition was seized from his possession. Deepak is a close associate of jailed gangster siblings Sushant and Sushil Dhalsamanta.
During interrogation, he confessed that he committed the crime as per the direction of Sushant and Sushil.Shankar was booked under Sections 399, 402 of IPC and 25 and 27 of Arms Act at the Malgodown police station. Another case under Sections 25 and 27 of Arms Act was pending against him at the Lalbag police station, police said.
Farook, who was a pulses wholesale trader at Malgodown here, was killed on November 12, 2014. He was shot dead at his shop, as he refused to pay extortion money of Rs 30 lakh.
While four persons were arrested at that time, Shankar managed to elude the police dragnet. Besides, three other accused, including the Dhalasamanta brothers, were remanded in connection with the case.
