Former BJP MLA loses battle against cancer

Former Ichagarh MLA cum BJP leader Sadhu Charan Mahto passed away at Rabindranath Tagore Hospital in Kolkata on Tuesday after prolonged illness. He was battling with throat cancer and kidney disease for the past one year. He was 48 years old.

Following his death, CM Hemant Soren expressed his sorrow over the passing away of the leader. As the news of his death reached his home town, a pall of gloom descended among the local people including BJP leaders, workers in the entire area including Adityapur, Jamshedpur, Gamharia and Ichagarh.

Expressing sorrow over his demise, Jamshedpur MP Bidhyut Baran Mahato informed that his body will be brought to Jamshedpur. His last journey will leave from the ancestral house.

According to the information, Sadhu Charan Mahto was undergoing treatment in the hospital for the last several months. He was elected to the Legislative Assembly from Ichagarh in 2014. He defeated JMM candidate Savita Mahto by a margin of 42,250 votes. In the 2019 elections too, he was a BJP candidate from Ichagarh, but JMM’s candidate Savita Mahto defeated him. Savita Mahto is the wife of Late Sudhir Mahato, former Deputy Chief Minister of Jharkhand.

Mahto had proved his mettle by winning the famous Ichagarh assembly on a BJP ticket. On Monday, on his way to Delhi from Manipur, Union Minister Arjun Munda visited Kolkata and met the family members of Sadhu Charan Mahto and inquired about his health.

On Monday night, Ranchi MP Sanjay Seth and BJP state spokesperson Kunal Sharangi also went to Kolkata. At present, his body is in the Rabindranath Tagore Hospital in Kolkata. Sadhu Charan Mahato, who was suffering from cancer, had a kidney transplant on 23 October. His wife and former Zilla Parishad member Sarathi Mahto donated the kidney. Since then his condition was improving, but suddenly his health deteriorated from last night. Doctors hurriedly put him on a ventilator, but he passed away today.
