The erstwhile queen of Tehri, Suraj Kunwar Shah (98) passed away in New Delhi on the weekend. Her husband, the erstwhile king of Tehri, late Manvendra Shah was an eight-time MP from Tehri Garhwal parliamentary seat. At present, her daughter-in-law Mala Rajya Laxmi Shah is an MP from the same parliamentary seat. The last rites of the erstwhile queen will be performed at Purnanand Ghat in Rishikesh on Monday.
Suraj Kunwar Shah of the erstwhile Banswara royal family of Rajasthan was married to Manvendra Shah on February 4, 1937. She had been unwell for a long time and breathed her last at her residence in New Delhi on Saturday. She left behind a son- Manujendra Shah and three daughters. The three daughters are part of the erstwhile royal family of Rajasthan. Suraj Kunwar Shah was a devotee of god Badrinath. She became queen of Tehri in 1948 after Manvendra Shah’s ascension to the throne.
