On the demand for appointment of Lokayukta in Uttarakhand, senior leader of Congress party Surendra Kumar observed a protest fast in his office for one hour on Tuesday. He also sent a memorandum to the governor of Uttarakhand requesting her to direct the state government to appoint a Lokayukta in the state to prevent corruption. He said that the Congress government under Harish Rawat had sent the files for appointment of Lokayukta for approval but the Lokayukta is locked as a property of Vidhan Sabha for the last seven years. Kumar said that an office of Lokayukta is functional at Industrial estate Dehradun and lakhs of Rupees are being spent every month in salaries and maintenance of this office.
He said that the BJP in its election manifesto had claimed to bring Lokayukta within 100 days of assuming office but the state has not got a Lokayukta in more than four years of BJP rule.
