Capital City to get Birsa Museum on Foundation Day

Friday, 12 November 2021 | PNS | Ranchi

Chief Minister Hemant Soren is likely to inaugurate a museum constructed at the old jail campus, which has been dedicated to freedom fighters of the State, including tribal leader and freedom fighter Birsa Munda, on November 15, the day on which the State celebrates its Foundation Day. The museum built at an old jail complex is where Birsa Munda popularly known as Dharti Abba or Father of the Earth breathed his last.

The museum design is based on Cellular jail in Andaman and Nicobar islands and is built at the cost of Rs 35 crore having statues of Birsa Munda. As per museum design, a statue of Birsa Munda has been installed in the room where he was imprisoned by the British, along with a 30-feet-high statue of Birsa Munda, built by sculptor Ram Sutar, has been installed on the left side of the entrance. The jail complex also has a representation of Ulihatu village in Khunti district where Birsa Munda was born.

At the entrance, there is a board having information about the arrival of the British in India, history of Ranchi, and the struggle of Birsa Munda.

The backside of the museum has 10 statues of martyrs, where their stories will be told through a laser show. Birsa Memorial Park is also being built next to the jail complex.

During the tenure of the previous Raghubar Das government in Jharkhand, it was decided to develop Ranchi's Birsa Munda Old Jail as a heritage complex. The old central jail was lying unused after the new jail was built at Hotwar on the outskirts of the city in 2006.

The conservation and restoration work of the museum has been done by Indian Trust for Rural Heritage and Development, an NGO. The nearby Smriti Park will showcase the various tribes of Jharkhand in specially designed huts and will host a war memorial containing the bust of tribal martyrs who sacrificed their lives in military warfare.

On November 15, on the occasion of Jharkhand Foundation Day, the Soren government is going to give the State launching various welfare schemes, introduction of new policies and inauguration of various projects. Sources said that the State Government is also going to provide appointment letters to people and in this connection Chief Secretary Sukhdev Singh has written a letter to all the departments regarding their preparation.

The Chief Secretary has directed to make available the complete list of the schemes to be inaugurated along with the cost. The Chief Secretary has said that the departments which will not distribute the appointment letter, will submit their report after registering zero report. CS has asked to provide all the information within a day. This year the State Foundation Day function will be held in the Project Building Secretariat.
