The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday termed as "undemocratic" a Chhattisgarh State Election Commission order axing the need for voters to show their identity cards to exercise their franchise in civic body polls on Monday.
Addressing the media, former Minister Ajay Chandrakar and Raipur MP Sunil Soni said the State Election Commissioner issued the order on midnight of Saturday.
The voter’s-slip will be enough to identity the electors.
The BJP leaders termed this undemocratic and said it would give rise to doubts of bogus voting.
Chandrakar said the ruling party, fearing defeat in the upcoming civic body polls, had used the constitutional body to issue this order.
The 73rd Amendment of Constitution makes it mandatory that voter’s identity card is mandatory and a key element of identification for any election process, he said.
If any bogus voting takes place on Monday, then it will be the responsibility of the ruling party and the State Election Commission. The party will approach the court if necessary.
Later, a delegation of BJP leaders called on the State Election Commissioner and the Governor. The delegation, led by Leader of Opposition Dharamlal Kaushik, handed over a memorandum seeking free, fair and peaceful polling.
