Assembly session from today, to be tumultuous

Wednesday, 01 December 2021 | SUDARSHAN CHHOTORAY | BHUBANESWAR

The three major political parties in the State started hectic parleys to decide their respective strategies for the State Assembly’s Winter Session beginning on Wednesday.

Opposition BJP and Congress are all set to raise the much-talked-about Mamita Meher murder  mystery and the alleged involvement of Minister of State for Home Dibya Shankar Mishra in it and the Naveen Patnaik Government's protection to Mishra.

The overall deterioration of law and order, including the Mahanga double murder, ACF Soumya Ranjan Mohapatra’s death and the rising crime against women and children as pointed out in the NCRB report, is sure to figure in the session. Problems relating to paddy procurement vis-a-vis mandi and the issue of MSP are also likely to surface in the House.

The recent NITI Ayog national multidimensional poverty index, Covid-19 management, preparation for a possible third wave, the unemployment crisis, repeal of three farm Acts, duped Chit fund depositors’ plight, forthcoming three-tier panchayat and urban local body elections and, above all, the Modi Government's Ayushman Bharat Yojana versus the State’s Biju Swasthy Kalyan Yojana are some other issue s to be raised.

While the Opposition parties have a plethora of issues to corner the Treasure Bench, the ruling BJD may take refuge of the unprecedented price hike of petroleum products, especially cooking gas. The BJD would also try to corner principal opposition party BJP on the forced repeal of three farm laws and the Kissan movement. While the Congress is all set to take on the Government on the Mamita Meher case and continue demanding sacking of Minister Mishra, the BJD may try to retaliate by bringing Congress leader and former Kalahandi MP Bhakta Charan Das' alleged proximity with Govinda Sahu, the main accused in the case.

Though the month-long session has five holidays and 26 working days, the question hour and various motions are likely to put the ruling party in the duck. The House would also be informed about the fate of the 12 Bills passed in the  last session.

There is a provision to place a summary regarding the status of assented Bills which were sent to the President of India and the State Governor. The House would hold discussions on the State Supplementary Budget and Statement of Expenditures.
