AIIMS denies treatment to non-Covid patients

Monday, 31 May 2021 | PNS | BHUBANESWAR

A human rights activist has moved the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) alleging that the AIIMS Bhubaneswar authorities are denying treatment to serious no-Covid patients.

Pradipta Nayak in his petition has alleged that due to denial of treatment, many serious patients are either succumbing to their ailments or forced to spend huge amounts of money in private healthcare facilities during the pandemic.   This news has been highlighted by the electronic and print media. The AIIMS Bhubaneswar is a premier hospital, on which patients from West Bengal, Jharkhand besides Odisha are dependent. But during the Covid second wave, the hospital authorities have shut down the OPD and are denying no-Covid patients critical care like ICU beds and ventilators, Nayal has alleged.

Giving some examples, Nayak stated one Plaban Kumar Ray was denied plastic surgery, for which he had to move from one hospital to another and later died. Nayak has prayed the commission to direct the AIIMS to submit a report in this regard.
