Night curfew timings changed in Chandigarh, more relaxations likely

Wednesday, 01 July 2020 | PNS | Chandigarh

The night curfew timing in Chandigarh will be from 10 pm to 5 am with the UT Administration on Tuesday adopting unlock 2.0 guidelines issued by the Union Home Ministry. Earlier, the timings for night curfew were 9 pm to 5 am. An order was issued by Manoj Parida, Adviser to UT Administrator in this regard.

As per the order, “Schools, colleges and coaching institutions in Chandigarh will remain closed till July 31. Cinema halls, gyms, swimming pools, entertainment parks, theatres, bars, auditoriums, assembly halls and similar places will continue to remain closed under unlock 2.0 in the city.”

“Any social, political, academic, cultural or religious function or any other large gathering will not be allowed in unlock 2.0. Dates for opening of these will be decided separately, based on the assessment of the situation,” the order stated. While relaxation of one hour has been given in night curfew, the UT Administration is ALSO likely to announce more relaxations after a review meeting to be held under Punjab Governor and UT Administrator VP Singh Badnore on Wednesday. The UT Administration may allow restaurants and hotels to serve liquor under unlock 2.0, may extend the dine-in timings, allow apni mandis (sector mandis) to operate, do away with odd-even stipulations in congested markets.

A senior UT officer said that a meeting will be held on Wednesday under the UT Administrator and various relaxations are under consideration.  The request regarding allowing hotels and restaurants to serve liquor, extending dine-in timings will be discussed, he said.

Notably, the Punjab Government had recently allowed restaurants to serve alcohol. Following this, the Hotel and Restaurant Association of Chandigarh had also demanded that the Chandigarh Administration should follow the suit.
