With huge scope for development of solar power projects in Odisha, Central public sector undertaking NHPC Limited has decided to set up 500-MW floating solar power projects in the State.
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the solar industry is facing a tough time. However, the authorities now want to expedite the projects. NHPC CMD AK Singh has urged the State Government in this regard.
The NHPC would join hands with the GEDCOL, a State PSU, for setting up the projects. The NHPC and the GEDCOL would sign an MoU in this regard soon to set up the floating solar power projects at Rengali, Upper Kolab, Hirakud and Indravati.
The projects would come up under Ultra Mega Renewable Energy Parks (UMREPPs), a major scheme of the Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE).
Singh has stressed on signing of an MoU at an early date and undertaking the projects in a time-bound manner.
Earlier, the State Government has approved the projects. A feasibility study was done on floating PV development over 12 water bodies in the hydro reservoirs as Odisha is ready to deploy low-carbon energy production systems and to improve energy efficiency, thereby contributing to the mitigation of global climate changes.
After MoU signing is over, detailed project reports (DPRs) would be prepared and the projects would be undertaken in a scheduled manner, officials say.
