Five days after the Sohna road under-construction flyover collapsed, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) on Wednesday imposed a penalty of Rs 50,000 per day on the contractor and also suspended the work of both agencies working on the project.
The collapsed flyover is part of the 6km elevated road being built along the Sohna Road as part of the Gurugram-Sohna-Alwar highway project which starts from Rajiv Chowk.
Two persons were injured when a huge concrete slab of the under-construction flyover fell on Sohna road on Saturday.
Project Director of NHAI Ashok Sharma said that the construction work on Sohna Road is going on in two parts.
“Construction work of the flyover from Rajiv Chowk to Badshahpur has been awarded to Rajiv Chowk Sohna Highway Private Limited while Badshahpur to Sohna part construction work had been awarded to Sohna Highway Private Limited,” Sharma said.
During the inspection, the NHAI team found that there was gross negligence on part of the contractors.
“The pits of the roads have not been filled as per contract conditions. Barricades have not been installed while working. The movement of vehicles is also being hampered. Due to this, there is a fear of a fatal accident on the stretch,” he said.
Traffic marshals have also been deployed arbitrarily, putting traffic safety at stake.
“In view of this, both agencies were given notice, but they did not meet proper arrangements to avoid any incident. So the NHAI has decided to suspend the work of both agencies,” Sharma said.
The official further said along with this, according to the terms of the contract, agencies have also been fined Rs 50 thousand each per day. It will remain in force until it meets the contract conditions.
