The proposed ‘Chhattisgarh Patrakar Suraksha Kanun’ (Chhattisgarh Journalist Safety Law) will become an example for other states, said Justice (retired) Aftab Alam on Saturday.
He made the observation while virtually addressing the final meeting of the drafting committee. The draft was finalized on Saturday and it will be soon forwarded to the state government, a press release said.
Ruchir Garg, a member of drafting committee and media advisor to the Chief Minister, said the government was determined to promote unbiased and free press in the state.
The proposed law will be a landmark in this direction, he added.
The committee paid rich tributes to group Editor of Deshbandhu newspaper Lalit Surjan who had died on December 2.
The Chhattisgarh government in March 2019 had formed a committee headed by retired Supreme Court Justice Aftab Alam to make a Journalist safety law.
Following various rounds of discussions and tour of different districts, a draft was prepared. In view of the Covid pandemic, online suggestions were invited in October. These were included in the draft, the press release said.
