A person was killed and another injured in two separate incidents of elephant attack in Dhenkanal and Angul districts on Friday.
The deceased was identified as Maguni Behera (50), a resident of Bajrakot village under the Rengali police limits in Kaniha block of Angul district.The injured was identified as Sananta Nayak (75), a resident of Meramandali village under the Motunga police limits in Dhenkanal district.An elephant attacked Maguni while he had been to a pond near his house to attend nature’s call at around 5 am.
His family members rushed him to the Kaniha Community Health Centre in a critical condition, where he succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment.
Receiving information, Kaniha forest department officials reached the deceased person’s house and assured his kin for a compensation of Rs 4 lakh. The district administration provided Rs 40,000 as assistance to the family for his last rites.In the other incident, septuagenarian Sananta Nayak was critically injured when he was attacked by an elephant after he stumbled upon the animal while he had gone outside his house for defecation in the morning.
He is undergoing treatment at a Government hospital at Meramandali, informed Dhenkanal DFO Prakash Chand Gogineni.
