Rain pours misery on Delhi, G’gram residents

Capital-NCR sees waterlogging, houses’ collapse, traffic jams 

Heavy rain in Delhi-NCR on Wednesday resulted in waterlogging, tree uprooting, partial house collapses and traffic jams at various places.

According to civic bodies of Delhi, seven trees were uprooted and waterlogging was reported in several areas.

A portion of a dilapidated building collapsed due to incessant rainfall in Chirag Delhi and a boundary wall of a public school collapsed in Saket according to South Corporation’s official.

Besides, a building situated at Moti Nagar and Jahangirpuri also collapsed, a senior north Corporation official said.

Many areas of the neighbouring Gurugram were submerged in an average of three feet of water, according to local administration. The worst hit areas being Delhi-Gurugram expressway, service lane near Jharsa Chowk, IffCO Chowk, Sohna Road, Narsinghpur, Basai Chowk, Sohna Chowk, Sector 4-7, Hanuman Chowk, Bilaspur Chowk, Fazilpur Chowk, Vatika Chowk, Subhash Chowk, Baghtawar Chowk, Atul Kataria Chowk, Mahavir Chowk, Dundahera and Jawala Mill.

Following the heavy rainfall, the Delhi Traffic Police issued an advisory for the people informing them about the routes with heavy jams.

The rain flooded many streets across the city, turning them into small rivers, as traffic came to a virtual standstill at key stretches. Many parts of the city were completely inundated after just a few hours of rain. Pictures and videos of vehicles stuck on waterlogged roads and people wading through waist-deep water were widely shared on social media.

According to the Delhi Traffic Police, waterlogging has been reported at BRT near Central School, Badarpur to Ashram, Badarpur flyover underpass, Sarita Vihar underpass, Dhaula Kuan towards AIIMS carriageway, Moti Bagh flyover underpass, MB Road near Batra Hospital, Palam Flyover and Chhata Rail.

 “Mayur Vihar Phase-2, Sarai Kale Khan to DND, Sashi Garden to Kotla, Seemapuri to Dilshad Garden underpass, MB Road at Maidan Garhi, MB Road at Anuvrat Marg, Apsara Border were also reported to have waterlogging,” said police.

According to the data released by the Gurugram administration, the Gurugram city -- recorded a rainfall of 95 mm, Manesar 75 mm, Wazirabad 50 mm, and Pataudi 21 from 8.30 am to 11.00 am.

Apart from these areas Wazirabad road, CRPF Chowk, Sheetla Mata Road, Palam Vihar Road, Kartepuri Chowk and Hero Honda Chowk were also badly affected by the waterlogging. Besides, vehicles also crawl at connecting roads to these points.

The rain water not only submerged the city’s main stretches and connecting roads but also accumulated at the offices of Municipal Corporation Gurugram (MCG), Haryana Shahari Vikas Pradhikaran (HSVP) and the Gurugram MLA office located near civil hospital.

Waterlogging was also reported from areas like the Old Delhi road in front of Maruti Gate-1, Unitech Cyber Park, Sector 4 and 5 roundabouts, Jawala Mill Road and Golf Course Road in Gurugram.

“Heavy rain disrupted traffic movements in Gurugram, MCG on their task to flush out rain water in the drainage with the help of pumps, fire tenders and other machinery. I have given instructions to the civic body officials that they should deploy sufficient machinery and manpower at the waterlogged places so that the waterlogging does not happen in these areas,” Mayor Madhu Azad, said.
