Puducherry on Thursday logge 489 fresh COVID-19 cases while four people succumbed to the virus taking the toll to 525, a top Health department official said.
The 489 new cases were reported after examination of 5,153 samples, Director of Health and Family Welfare S Mohan Kumar said in a press release.
The overall tally of infections in the union territory rose to 28,024 (after transfer of nine cases to Tamil Nadu), he added.
The four fatalities in the last 24 hours ending 10 am today included a 53-year old woman.
Of the overall tally of 28,024 coronavirus cases, as many as 4,994 were active, while 22,505 patients had recovered and were discharged, he said.
The Health department Director said the fatality rate was 1.87 per cent while the recovery rate was 80.31 per cent.
The Health Department has so far tested 1,89,568 samples and it was found that 1,58,206 were negative.
The result of the examination of the remaining specimens was awaited.
As many as 431 patients were discharged from hospitals during the last 24 hours, Mohan Kumar said.
The four patients who died (including a former Director of Medical Services of the Puducherry government D Carounanidy) were in the age group ranging between 53 and 83 years and most of them had comorbidities such as diabetes.
The Puducherry region accounted for 379 out of the 489 fresh cases followed by Karaikal (79), Yanam (11) and Mahe (20).
