Lulu, Bulan, Aasif, Arnab, Hamoon, Afsan, Tej, Ghumi, Neer, Jhar , Sidrah and Hareed are among the 169 new names of tropical cyclones over India Ocean including Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea, released by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The new names were contributed by 13 member countries of the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) / United Nations (UN) Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) panel on tropical cyclones (PTC).
The Met Department also predicted adverse weather in Andamans, Maharashtra, Goa and Kerala over the next 4-5 days due to formation of low pressure over over South Andaman sea and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal.
The next tropical cyclone’s name will be “Amphan” ( a Thai name) over the Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea. According to the IMD, the Regional Specialized Meteorological Centre (RSMC) and World Meteorological Department has accepted 13 new names of tropical cyclone proposed by the IMD, which include Tej, Murasu, Probaho, Prabhanjan, Ghumi, Murasu, Probaho, Prabhanjan, Ghumi, Ambud and Vega. Any tropical cyclone that hits the region is known by a name given in the list. There are 13 countries member of RSMCs and each allowed to propose 13 names. The next tropical cyclone over Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea will be known as “Amphan” ( a Thai name) the earlier list of 2004 is left with only one name - Amphan.
“Once the last name (Amphan) of the previous list is used, the TCs thereafter will be known one-by-one as Nisarga (shared by Bangladesh), Gati (India), Nivar (Iran) in that order from the list of 169 names,” the IMD said.
The process of naming cyclones involves several countries in the region and is done under the aegis of the World Meteorological Organization. The current list of RSMCs members include India, Bangladesh, Iran, Maldives, Myanmar, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, United Arab Emirates and Yemen.
As per new list, Nisarga, Arnab, Upakul, Barshon, Rajani, Urmi, Meghala, Samiran, Pratikul, Mahanisha are among the names for tropical cyclone approved by Bangladesh.
