Solar fencing cut by mischievious elements

Friday, 22 November 2019 | PNS | Haridwar

The forest department in Haridwar had installed solar fencing along a five-kilometre stretch on Wednesday. However, during the night, mischievous elements cut the solar fencing meant to keep elephants away from human settlements.

The department had installed solar fencing on a five- kilometre stretch from Bilkeshwar to Ranipur and Convention Hall.

Considerable effort was put in for the solar fencing as the area is densely forested. The fencing work was completed on Wednesday morning but on visiting the site to inspect on Thursday morning, the department staff found the wiring cut at many places.

The Haridwar divisional forest officer Akash Verma said that the solar fencing was put up as part of an Indo-German collaboration.

The solar fencing has been erected without using poles, using trees instead of poles. Snapping the fence at one spot will deactivate the entire powered network.

It is suspected that the fencing was cut by some mischievous elements.

The department has repaired the fencing and patrol teams have been directed to keep a watch on it during the night.
