South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) has decided to install five tonne bio-gas waste to energy plant at ‘Waste to Wonder Park’ to produce energy by using waste.
The civic body has also entered into an agreement with ‘Security Printing and Minting India Limited’ (SPMIL). Bio-gas typically refers to a mixture of different gases produced by the breakdown of organic matter in the absence of oxygen. Bio-gas can be produced from raw materials such as agricultural waste, manure, municipal waste, plant material, sewage, green waste or food waste.
SDMC Mayor Sunita Kangra said that proposed plant will produce 700 cubic meter of bio-gas which will approximately generate 1,400 units of electricity per day besides 500-600 kg of organic manure.
“The by-product of the plant will be used by SDMC in its parks as the organic manure,” she said.
Commissioner Gyanesh Bharti said that SPMIL has sanctioned an amount of Rs 2.94 cr for the project under corporate social responsibility scheme.
The project includes five year maintenance and running cost. The capital cost of the project is Rs 1.44 cr. The plant will use the green waste of 250 SDMC parks falling within the five kms vicinity of the wonder park (Okhla).
Bharti also said this plant will be an environment friendly project which also creates awareness among the visitors of the park, about effective handling of the organic waste in efficient manner.
