In what can be termed as positive sign for the Uttarakhand Vidhyalayi Shiksha Parishad (UVSP) which is continuing to lose students to other boards like Central Board of Secondary Examination ( CBSE), the pass percentage in both class X and XII examination is witnessing an increase in last few years.
In class X, the pass percentage in the year 2014 was 67.40 percent which improved to 70.68 in the year 2015. In the year 2016, 73.47 percent cleared the examination while the pass percentage in 2017 stood at 73.67 percent. In 2018, the pass percentage further improved to 74.57 percent which has jumped to 76.14 this year.
A similar trend is visible in the results of class XII. In the year 2014, the pass percentage of students was 70.39 percent which jumped to, 74.54 percent in the year 2015, further improved to 78.41, 78.89 and 78.97 percent in the years 2016, 2017 and 2018 respectively. This year also the upward swing continued with 80.13 percent students coming out with flying colours in this examination. The data shows that not only more students are passing the class X and XII board examinations, the number of students getting 1st division marks are also increasing. In class X examination, 31166 students got 1st division this year as compared with 28673 and 26109 in the years 2018 and 2017 respectively. In class XII too, 19667 students secured 1st division in the year 2017, while in the year 2018, 24341 students got 1st division. Continuing the upward trend, 26278 students got 1st division this year.
When asked to comment on increasing pass percentage, the Additional Director, secondary education, Ram Krishna Uniyal said that the Uttarakhand board in last few years is adopting a scientific method of evaluation due to which the marks secured by the students have increased. “The board is organising workshops prior to evaluation where the teachers are trained about step-wise evaluation pattern. Similarly the appointment of new teachers, continuous appraisals, improved training standards and learning level assessment and practice of holding remedial classes have resulted in increase in pass percentage,’’ he said.
Increasing in pass percent in Uttarakhand board is significant as the students getting passed out from this board were finding it hard to get admissions in many courses of higher education. With Uttarakhand board becoming magnanimous in award of marks, the students their parents and teachers are happy.
