Balram coalmine shutdown enters 14th day

Friday, 25 October 2019 | PNS | SAMBALPUR

Over a two-week shutdown at the Balram opencast project of the Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL) at Talcher has affected  2.2 lakh tones of coal supply, around 1.8 lakh tones of coal production and more than 4 lakh cubic meters of overburden removal.

The stalemate is due to the internal rift of two nearby villages.

A series of initiatives taken by the civil administration and the MCL management has failed to mend the differences between the villagers of Solada and Danara who have forcibly stopped mining operations for the 14th day.

Notably, the Balram OCP has a target of six million tonnes of coal production for 2019-20.
