New colours, simpler designs with a focus on sustainability, the New Year is likely to usher in trends that will revamp your interiors

Welcome trends for 2019

As the ‘Living Coral’ has been declared as the year for 2019 by the Pantone Colour Institute, we are bound to witness a series of interior innovation that will be a reflection of this color trend. The shade exudes positivity and vibrance with a subtle undertone of femininity, and as a result, we will see many interesting combinations such as coral paired with grey, beige, white and other neutral shades to highlight happy undertones.

In 2019, we will also see the rise of eco-friendly and sustainable trends for interiors, thus pro-environment fabrics and innovations will be a huge trend. Right from cotton and organic fibres such as jute, silk, and hemp — the idea of sustainability will impact lifestyle choices. Eco-friendly furniture for a home like cane, hand-loom made organic cotton upholstery and bedspreads, jute rugs and silk curtains will come in handy to style your home. The idea to reduce our carbon footprints will also see an upsurge in recycled products that will not only make your house more beautiful but will also make have an impact on the well-being of the planet. The focus will be on well-lit rooms with natural light and bright colour combinations for living rooms.

One can include additional props like indoor plants, classic wood furniture and artworks to empty spaces to add a personal touch. Speaking of wood finishes for interiors, some of the big trends in this segment for the coming seasons are the herringbone, chevron, and geometric patterns. The criss-cross chevron pattern on floors with the herringbone adds a sophisticated look and gives a luxe appeal to your home. If you like a modern touch, go for geometric decor items that create a subtle contrast with your interior. One can also use patterned rugs and arty highlights to balance the symmetry of the room.

Say goodbye to trends of 2018

While trends in interiors keep changing every season, a big shift in interiors will be toward discarding of ‘fast furniture’. Just like fast fashion, we tend to buy interior goods that look good for a while but fade out too quickly. Finally, it is time to say goodbye to them forever as the next big change points at sustainable options. Harsh and bold lighting like big, ugly chandeliers that consume a lot of electricity will be officially out. Emphasis will be on LED lights, minimalistic bulb designs, quirky antique style lamps and of course, natural light that will brighten up your decor.

Complex patterns such as dense damask are totally going to be out of style, especially for wallpapers, furniture and curtains because if everything is simple then why bother adding complicated designs that match nothing. Similarly, it’s time to say goodbye to prehistoric ideas such as window valances that match curtains and furniture because the idea is to open up and not get restricted in space.
