The Gwalior bench of the Madhya Pradesh High Court once again pulled up the officials of the Gwalior Development Authority (GDA) for the poor road conditions and negligible basic infrastructure at Transport Nagar and the Authority’s failure to resolve these issues.
Earlier, the High Court had passed strict instructions to repair the roads at Transport Nagar, where thousands of trucks from various parts of the country come every day.
The quality of roads at Transport Nagar is appalling, to say the least with mostly sand being used for resurfacing.
This is despite the fact that the HC had earlier expressed deep displeasure at the quality of the resurfacing.
The GDA did take up temporary patchwork of the damaged roads after the HC’s strictures but the current condition of most of the roads here is far from satisfactory.
Transport Nagar has a total length of 13. 5 kilometers roads out of which only 3.5 kilometers are fit for traffic.
The roads here are a huge problem with cave-ins that pose a risk to life and property.
Hundreds of trucks are parked on the main road leading to the Transport Nagar, causing large scale traffic congestion.
Besides causing extensive damages to trucks the poor roads also cause dust nuisance that affects the health of the people who frequent these roads.
Traffic jams, breathing problems and broken down trucks are customary scenes in this area.
Security at Transport Nagar too is an issue. Around 1200 trucks, bringing goods worth crores of rupees arrive here every day, but there is no adequate security.
The police outpost is thinly staffed and the situation could become really bad due to this insignificant presence of police force to keep a check on illegal activities, especially pilferage of goods.
The Chief Executive Officer of the Gwalior Development Authority in his undertaking before the High Court has assured the court that repairs to all the roads in Transport Nagar will be completed by the 31st of January, 2019.
