Bagun Sumbrui put to rest in Chaibasa with State honours

Veteran Congress leader and former MP Bagun Sumbrui was put to rest with State honours at his residential premises located at Nimdih, Chaibasa on Saturday. Senior Congress leaders, including former Union Minister Sudodhkant Sahay, former Jamshedpur West MlA Banna Gupta, JMM leader Champai Soren were present on the occasion. 

Earlier, the last journey of Sumbrui was left for Chaibasa from the city at 10 am. Earlier on the behalf of the district administration, Deputy Commissioner Amit Kumar and SSP Anoop Birtharey paid tribute to departing soul. The leader was then brought to Congress district headquarters Tilak Pustakalaya in Bistupur.

Former Singhbhum MP Sumbrui (94), who was undergoing treatment at  the  Critical Care Unit (CCU) of Tata Main Hospital (TMH) died on Friday evening.

Congress president Rahul Gandhi has expressed grief over the demise of former Sumbrui. Gandhi tweeted: “The truth of Jharkhand, the symbol of simplicity and humility, the voice of tribal society, the true disciple of Gandhiji’s thoughts, Bagun Sumbrui passed away, the entire Congress family is mourning. My feelings are with the family members”.

Five times the MP from Chaibasa and four times MlA, Bagun was son of Manaki Sumbrui. Mother’s name was Dashmati Sumbrui. Bagun Sumbrui came to politics in the year 1946. For the first time in 1967 was elected as legislator and made minister in the Bihar government. After this, in 1969 and 1972 and again in 2004, he became MlA from Chaibasa. Bagun was elected MP from Singhbhum parliamentary seat in 1977, 1980, 1989 and then in 2004. After the formation of Jharkhand, on 24 August 2002, he was elected as the Deputy Speaker of the legislative Assembly. He hailed from Bhuta village, near Chaibasa in West Singhbhum district.
