Mr Uttarakhand is 'prisoner' of luxury

Wednesday, 24 January 2018 | Kanika Mehta | New Delhi

He aspired to be a successful choreographer, wanted to act in films, participated in reality shows Nach Baliye, Jhalak Dikhlaja and Dance India Dance. Adnan Khan, 22, was a rising star as he also won Mr Uttarakhand title in 2014.

But the desire to become super rich drew him to the world of crime, said the Delhi Police that arrested Khan on Monday night in connection with Rs 3.5 lakh robbery which took place at a Dominos Pizza outlet in Dwarka Sector 12 on December 11 last year around 1:30am when the pizza outlet was closing down after a heavy weekend turnover.

Apart from being a dance sensation, Khan was a well- known face among Delhi’s clubbing circuit. He confessed to committing the robbery to impress his girlfriends and to boost his dance career.

Khan’s YouTube channel has a total of four videos where he is seen dancing on popular Bollywood numbers.

He even claimed he got an offer from a Bollywood director from Mumbai to choreograph dance moves for his movie.  Khan even got an offer for a role in a Hindi film.

Shibesh Singh, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Dwarka, said, “Khan was a co- accused in the robbery. It was outlet manager of the popular pizza outlet Vijay, who informed Khan and the two others about heavy cash inflow at the outlet during the weekend. Since all the accused live in the same neighbourhood in Uttam Nagar, they hatched a plan to commit robbery. The accused also informed us that at the time of the robbery, they knew that the DVR of the CCTV cameras was not working so they took advantage of this fact and went ahead and committed the robbery.”

According to senior police officers, after the manager of Domino’s Pizza outlet reported that some unidentified people with big knives had barged into the store and took away Rs 3.5 lakh, probe was launched.

The Dwarka DCP said following tip offs and initial probe, one person, identified as Ram, was arrested and sent to jail. “His interrogation revealed that four persons were involved in the robbery case and a dancer of a club was roped in as he did not have any previous criminal record. Accordingly, many informers were deployed and many CCTV recordings were analysed. Traps were also laid at several places during the drive and dossiers of several criminals having similar modus operandi were analysed to zero in on the accused,” the DCP said.

It was finally on Sunday that specific information was received that one accused namely Adnan Khan would come to a bus stand at Dwarka Mor. He was spotted and nabbed. Following which he was formally arrested.

“A class 10th dropout, Khan is son of a mechanic. He started taking dance classes at an early age and has also started a YouTube channel dedicated to dance. He took part in several TV dancing shows. Though he could not make it to the top, he started getting invites from other parts of country for dance competitions and performances.

Due to name and fame, he was very popular among girls and to earn money he started dancing in Delhi’s  clubs and restaurants,” Singh said.

Efforts are being made to arrest his other accomplices, police said.
