Zero period for weak Class X, XII students

Saturday, 28 July 2018 | Staff Reporter | NEW DELHI

The Delhi Government-run schools will hold “zero-period” for students studying in Class X and XII who are to appear in their Board exam next year. The “zero-period” will focus on teaching specific subjects.

In the backdrop of the “result analysis” of academic session 2017-18 depicting that the performance of students of Classes X and XII needs to be improved in specific subjects, the Directorate of Education has directed the Heads of Government schools under it to prepare the time-table for “zero-period” and implement it with immediate effect in their respective schools.

In the “result analysis” it was found that in Class X students struggled with Mathematics and Science while in Class XII students’ weak subjects varied from school to school. Thus the DoE circular stated that in Class X, zero-period may be focused on Mathematics and Science. For Class XII students it was suggested that head of schools be given the power to make decision. A principal of a Delhi Government school said on the condition of anonymity that they are working on making time-table for the “zero-period”.

He said that contrary to the last year “zero-period” this year it will be started earlier and it would prove beneficial to students. “Also we will get more time to work upon the weak areas and improve it significantly,” he said.

Earlier in the month, the Delhi Government released an outcome report of its ambitious 'Mission Buniyaad Scheme' claiming that the learning ability of Government school students has improved significantly over the past years, with 63 per cent of children in Classes III to IX now able to read their textbooks. The programme will continue till the end of this month.
