The Delhi University (DU) will use standard “multiplier factor 9.5” for converting Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) given under the present scheme of Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) from the current academic session (2010-19). Percentages are required for making cut-offs for admission to various post-graduate (PG) courses in DU. Varsity reserves 50 percent of the PG seats for the DU graduates, admission against which is made on the cut-off based on the percentage of marks. While rest of the PG seats are filled through an entrance test open to all.
The first batch of students who will graduate under CBCS this year at DU will have CGPA mentioned on their mark-sheets instead of marks or percentage. These students will apply against the 50 percent “direct DU quota” in PG courses for which university requires to convert CGPA into respective percentages before determining their cut-offs.
The admissions to Undergraduate courses (UG) of Delhi University (DU) for academic session 2018-19 will tentatively begin from first week of next month with the opening of the online registration process. The PG registration is slated to start after opening of the UG registrations.
“We have decided that we will use the standard multiplier factor of 9.5 that has also been recommended by University Grants Commission (UGC),” said a senior member of admission committee of DU. After getting CGPA converted into percentage by multiplying it with 9.5 the cut-off based merit would be made. For the purpose of making merit or cut-off based on percentage, two places upto decimal would be considered, the member said.
Earlier, the admission committee deliberated over several other alternatives including doing away with the 50 percent quota for the DU graduates in its PG courses. However, fearing strong reactions from students and under pressure from the elected teacher representatives in the admission committee, the committee finally decided to continue with the quota. However, several others including these academic council members were sidelined by forming an admission advisory committee.
However, according to experts, there is still an issue that is required to be addressed by the admission committee which pertains to filling of the last few seats. As there would be more aspirants with the same percentage of marks claiming their right on the seats. “In such a case we have to select candidate based on their age or some other criteria giving preference to candidate who is elder,” said an admission committee member.
Also this year, according to an admission committee member, the portal for the merit based and entrance based UG courses have been integrated. “last year the professional UG courses were not part of merit based UG portal, though they were on the DU server only but its database was maintained by the agency which conducted professional UG courses entrance. Now, we have integrated it and students are required to register at same place,” said the member. He said that last year it took about 10 days to integrate both the database due to which admissions got delayed but this year this delay would not be there.
DU conducts online entrance for the 9 professional UG courses contrary to the UG courses admissions for which are based on cut-offs based on marks. Professional UG courses include courses like Bachelor of Management Studies (BMS), BA Business Economics, Bachelor of Business Administration (Financial Investment Analysis), Bachelor of science in physical education health education & sports, BA (H) multimedia and mass communication etc.
