Dream job?

Wednesday, 04 April 2018 | Pioneer

For better or for worse, Internet has changed our lives and also created interesting new jobs!

Online video giant Netflix is offering a job to anyone interested to work for them watching Netflix content. Now there is a catch involved being that you have to be proficient in Japanese to take up Netflix on this offer but what nextIJ Paying power users for the privilege of using your networkIJ If that were the case for WhatsApp, many people in India would be rich. Netflix's offer in this case is very unique but at least it is over the table. The fact is that several online service providers do offer many of their services at a considerable subsidy. One could argue that at the end of the day, venture funded forms are a way of transferring wealth from the very rich to merely rich. After all, who doesn't mind discounts but to take the maximum advantage of those discounts, you have to use the services quite a bit or buy really expensive things. After all, a 20 per cent discount of a product that costs Rs 25,000 is a lot better than a 50 per cent discount on a Rs 1,000 product. Want to maximise discounts on cab aggregators, you need to use them a lot. And if you are a Netflix power user, you are either a liberal arts student in college with a family business lined up or are already so wealthy that you don't need the Netflix job.

If you have a real job that involves proper work, you obviously won't have the time or the expertise needed to take up the Netflix job. Or would youIJ The rise of online streaming services such as Netflix have also heralded what some describe as the ‘Golden Age’ of television. Of course, that clearly applies to Western content because in India, regressive half-baked shows still rule the roost. However, if Netflix offered such a job to a viewer in India maybe the quality of television content in India could dramatically improve and instead of always appealing to the lowest common denominator, we could actually start seeing path-breaking Indian content. Actually, for that both Netflix and Amazon Prime, funded by huge amounts of capital are slowly transforming Indian content. But the fact remains that India despite its massive population remains a small market. The total number of subscribers of these online video services are miniscule. Yes, the future could be online, and Netflix's dream job could also come to India soon but might still be several years away. However, if you binge-watch Japanese shows on Netflix, you might still have a shot!
