Class X Board exams are back, what it means

Sunday, 09 April 2017 | Pioneer

  • It means that those students who gave their Class X will be the last batch to have been part of the Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation
  • The first batch to take the reintroduced Class X Board exam will be in 2018
  • At present, there are approximately 2.5 crore students who are affiliated to the CBSE Board who could choose between a Board exam or a school-based exam when they were in Class X. This is not longer applicable
  • Human Resources Development Minister Prakash Javadekar had said he favoured making Board exam compulsory for CBSE students as is the practice in all State Boards
  • The Government's move to made Class X Board exams compulsory comes after complaints from parents and academicians that educational standards have been slipping under the present system. Also it was found that students found it difficult to cope with the studies when they came into Class XI and faced Class XII Board exam
  • To reduce the pressure on the students, 80 per cent weightage will be on the result of the Board exams and 20 per cent on school-based assessment
  • The CBSE’s governing body has recommended the three language formula to continue till Class X Board exams. This means that students studying Sanskrit till Class VIII will have to study the subject for another two years, till Class X Board exams. The three-language system means students in Hindi-speaking States should learn a modern Indian language, apart from Hindi and English and in non-Hindi-speaking States, they should learn Hindi along with the regional language and English
  • CBSE’s governing body also is determined to ensure that principals of all CBSE schools pass an eligibility test. So a test will be designed on the lines of the Central Teacher Eligibility Test for principals which they have to pass
  • In a meeting of Central Advisory Board of Education that was held in 2016, amendments in the no-detention policy is also on the cards. In other words, if it comes into force, schools may have an opportunity of a re-test for students from Classes VI to VIII and after Class IX students may be detained if their performance is not good.
