The outer Wheeler Island located under Bhadrak district’s Chandbali tehsil was formally recognised as the APJ Abdul Kalam Island on his 2nd death anniversary on Thursday.
After obtaining no objection certificate from the Ministry of Home Affairs to rename the ‘Outer Wheeler Island’ as the APJ Abdul Kalam Island, the State Revenue Department issues a gazette notification in this regard.
Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik informed this while paying tributes to eminent scientist and former president APJ Abdul Kalam at a gathering here on the day. He remembered Kalam's emotional attachment with the Interim Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur in Baleswar district and Wheeler Island in Bhadrak district.
Kalam had spent a major fraction of his life time in these two locations as part of his endeavours to build missiles for the security of the country, said the Chief Minister.
Patnaik had earlier announced to rename the Wheeler Island after Kalam.
