Controversial Rashtriya Navnirman Party (RNP) chief Amit Jani and one of his supporters were arrested by Agra Police in lucknow on Monday after he announced to hoist a saffron flag inside Taj Mahal on Friday.
However, the lucknow Police said that Jani and his aide Updesh Rana were arrested in a criminal case for uploading a controversial post on the social media. After Jani’s arrest from Mall Avenue, the duo was taken to Agra where they would be produced before a magistrate on Tuesday.
The police said that Jani had recently posted a photo of Taj Mahal with a saffron flag after which an FIR was registered against him at Tajganj police station of Agra on charges of inciting communal passion.
In his post, Jani had also asked all Hindus to reach Taj Mahal on Friday (November 3) where he would hoist a saffron flag. Friday was chosen as members of minority community gathered for offering prayers at a mosque on Taj Mahal premises.
On October 23, Jani had recited Hanuman chalisa along with several supporters to hog limelight.
Speaking to the media soon after his arrest, Jani said that he was a true Hindu and would continue to fight for his community. He claimed that Taj Mahal was originally a Shiv temple. Earlier, Jani was accused of damaging the statue of BSP chief Mayawati in lucknow in 2012 and was also arrested. That time, he had claimed that he went through the act on the direction of SP patron Mulayam Singh Yadav.
