Justice Iqbal Ahmed Ansari, the retired Chief Justice of Patna High Court, on Tuesday joined as the Punjab State Human Rights Commission’s chairperson.
As per the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993, Amended 2006 Punjab State Human Rights Commission comprises of one chairperson and two members.
With the joining of Justice Iqbal Ahmed Ansari, the Commission has completed its coram.
Notably, the PSHRC receives approximately 15,000-16,000 new cases of human rights violations every year. From year 1997 up to July 31, 2017, the Commission has received 2,52,324 numbers of cases, out of which approximately 55 percent cases are of human rights violation by the police.
Justice Ansari, who was elevated to the bench of Gauhati High Court as Judge on March 4, 2002, joined the Patna High Court on November 11, 2013, and retired as the Chief Justice of Patna High Court on October 29, 2016.
