The UP Police was again in the limelight for the wrong reasons, when a team of policemen kicked a pregnant woman suspecting her to be bootlegger during a raid at a Barabanki village resulting in her death on Sunday night.
As per reports, a police team from Asandra police station raided Manpur Makohia village as part of a drive against illicit liquor on Sunday night. During subsequent house to house search, the cops arrested three persons. In the process, Ruchi Rawat (22), who was eight-month pregnant, was pushed and kicked by the cop as the latter suspected that she was concealing liquor strapped to her belly. Unable to withstand the physical trauma , the woman succumbed on the spot.
While locals chargeed the police of being barbaric and brutally kicking the woman in suspicion, the police claimed that the house of the victim was not raided.
SP Barabanki, Anil Kumar Singh admitted that the raid was carried out in the village as part of a drive against illicit liquor on Sunday night and three people were arrested.
The SP said that Circle Officer of Ramsanehi Ghat has been asked to probe the death of the woman and assured of initiating stern action if any cop was was found responsible for the death.
Meanwhile in Bareilly, half a dozen passengers of a car were killed when their vehicle collided with a truck near Hafizganj bypass on Bareilly-Pilibhit Highway late on Sunday night. The deceased were returning to Pilibhit after attending a wedding ceremony. The bodies were sent for autopsy but the errring truck driver managed to evade arrest.
The deceased were identified as Naseem (35), Sharif (36), Shibbu (30), Yunus (22), Sonu (30) of Wasidnagar under Kotwali area of Philibhit and Ajmat (40) of Shahi Bareilly area.
