In the sensational Anupama Gulati murder case, her husband Rajesh Gulati was sentenced for life imprisonment on Friday. The Court also slapped a financial penalty of Rs 15 lakh on Rajesh failing which his jail term would get extended by two more years.
Additional District Judge pronounced the much awaited judgement on Friday. On Thursday, the court had found Rajesh guilty of murder and destruction of evidences under section 302 and 201 of Indian Penal Code (IPC). The court had completed the hearing in the case on August 18.
On Friday, the prosecution terming the crime committed as rarest of rare demanded death penalty for Rajesh Gulati. The defence side however wanted lesser penalty as according to them the case is of unintended murder. After hearing the argument on the quantum of penalty, the Judge pronounced sentence of life imprisonment and penalty of Rs 10 lakh in section 302 of Indian Penal Code (IPC) and sentence of two years of imprisonment and penalty of Rs 5 lakh in section 201 of IPC. The two sentences would run together.
After the judgment, the family members of Anupama appeared relieved.
Her brother said that the family is happy as at last justice is delivered to Anupama. He said that a bank deposit of the penalty imposed would be made in the name of two children of Anupama.
On December 11, 2010 Dehradun police found the pieces of body of Anupama in deep freezer kept in the house of Rajesh Gulati. Such was the brutality of the crime that the body was cut into many small pieces.
Rajesh Gulati along with his wife and two children lived in Prakash Nagar area of Dehradun. On October 17, 2010 Anupama went missing. The matter came to fore when the brother of Anupama came to Dehradun but Rajesh didn’t allow him entry to the house, her brother informed the police which forced its way in to the house found the body in the freezer.
After an investigation the police filed a charge sheet in court blaming Rajesh of murdering his wife in cold blood. In the night of October 17, Rajesh entered into a quarrel with Anupama and in fit of rage he murdered her.
Next day Rajesh cut the body of Anupama into small pieces by a stone cutter. He kept these pieces in the freezer and was slowly disposing them of near Mussoorie road before he could complete his job he was arrested.
