Former Minister Yogendra Sao surrenders with wife and son

Tuesday, 23 May 2017 | RR Srivastava | Hazaribagh

Former Minister of Jharkhand Yogendra Sao, his wife Nirmala Devi, a Congress legislator and son Ankit Raj surrendered in a Hazaribagh court on Monday. The apex court has rejected their bail granted by Jharkhand High Court in case no. 228/16 registered in Barkagoan police station.

After Supreme Court’s order Nirmala Devi and Ankit Raj had tried to surrender before the court last week but the court had not accepted their pray because at that time the order of apex court was not available. Today the court sent them all in custody. Yogendra Sao was sent to Dumka jail while his wife MlA Nirmala Devi and son Ankit Raj were sent to Hazariagh central jail.

In the year 2016 case no. 228/16 was lodged in Barkagaon police station of Hazaribagh district in which former minister Yogendra Sao, his wife Nirmala Devi and their son Ankit Raj were made named accused.

This case was related with the incident of firing and clash between villagers and police on October 1, 2016. Nirmala Devi was leading the villagers against NTPCs mining activity and when she was arrested the agitated mob had forcibly released her from police custody. Police had opened fire on that day to disperse the mob.

later Nirmala Devi, her son Ankit Raj and Yogendra Sao were arrested and after about three-four months the mother and son came out of jail after getting bail in this case from Jharkhand High Court. Yogendra Sao remained in jail due to his involvement in other cases. The Jharkhand government challenged this decision in Supreme Court and last week Supreme Court set aside the orders of Jharkhand High Court.

On Monday all the accused surrendered in the court of ADJ. The government pleader produced the copy of Supreme Court decision and then the court ordered to take them in judicial custody.

The former minister was brought to Hazaribagh under police custody from Dumka jail yesterday and was admitted in Sadar hospital Hazaribagh. After this order he was sent back to Dumka jail.
