Dehradun District Magistrate SA Murugesan said on Monday that the owners of the registered abattoirs and meat shops must fully comply with the amended prevention of cruelty to animals (slaughter houses) act and follow other rules.
He asked the officers concerned to see to it in their respective jurisdictional limits that the rules are fully complied with by the abattoirs located in the district after he took stock of the condition of the registered abattoirs during a meeting with the district officers. He also asked details about the unregistered slaughter houses now running in the district and ordered for their prompt shutdown.
Murugesan said that the officers have been directed to inspect the slaughter houses and the meat shops and submit a report on how they are running. Furthermore, a committee has been formed to verify things following physical inspection. The report the committee would submit would be sent to the chief veterinary and health officer, Municipal Corporation, DM added.
He stressed on the chief veterinary officer, police officers, additional municipal commissioner, zila panchayat officers and food safety officer launching a joint inspection and taking action against the violators of the laws. The points that the officers must keep in mind during such inspections include the cleanliness and sanitation arrangements at the slaughter houses and the meat shops. Besides, they must see whether any cruelty is being done to the animals kept there for slaughter, DM said.
Among others present at the meeting were the chief development officer GS Rawat, district food safety officer GS Kandwal, SP rural Sarita Dobhal, chief veterinary officer Dr SB Pandey and senior city health officer Dr V Sati.
