Teen dies as speeding Merc hits his scooty

A 17-year-old boy, Atul Arora, lost his life when his scooty was allegedly hit by an over-speeding Mercedes Benz near Sundar Vihar Ashram in the GH9 market area in Outer Delhi’s Paschim Vihar on Sunday around 10.36 pm.

Eyewitness Ashita Saini told The Pioneer, “I was going to the nearby ice-cream parlour with my cousin when I saw the speeding Mercedes. Seconds later, the car hit the scooty and the teenager was thrown 15 feet into the air by the impact. He hit the ground hard and his face and one leg were badly smashed.”

The eyewitness said Atul was not wearing helmet when the accident happened. The terrible incident comes exactly 11 months after a 32-year-old business executive Sidhant Sharma was mowed down by a speeding Mercedes driven by a juvenile in North Delhi’s Civil lines area in April.

DCP (Outer District) Rishi Pal said, “It has been ascertained that the car involved in the accident is a Mercedes. We are trying to get the registration number of the car.”

The police are scanning CCTV footage of  the area to identify the driver who fled the spot after hitting the scooty.

Atul, a Class 12 student of Bal Bharti School at Pitampura, was the sole male heir of a joint family which included the families of two brothers of his father Ajay Arora. He is survived by his parents and two elder sisters.

A pall of grief fell on the Arora household when the body of their youngest child was brought to the house on Monday morning.

“Atul was 13-years-old when his father, Ajay Arora, who was working as a Personal Secretary to the Chief Engineer of the Delhi Development Authority suffered a paralytic attack. For the last four years, Atul had been looking after his father. A bright student, Atul was a responsible son. Post the paralytic attack, the bond between Atul and his father grew as only a male member could have attended to the problems faced by Ajay on a daily basis,” said Rajindra Satija, Atul’s uncle.

Recalling the hit and run, Ashita Saini said, “I made a call to the PCR. The police station is 2 km away from the accident spot and an official from the Mianwali Nagar police station came 30-35 minutes later. As far as I can recall, Atul was not wearing a helmet. But after the terrible accident, I did saw a lot of damaged parts of the scooty and a helmet.”

Sachet Shokeen, a first year student of the Maharaja Agrasen College rushed Atul in his car to the Balaji Action Hospital, but the doctors declared him brought dead.

“Many people were present at the accident spot. They discussed the gravity of the accident but nobody came forward to help the bleeding teenager. Doctors told me that had Atul been rushed to hospital five minutes earlier, something could have been done to save him,” said a grieving Sachet.
