National Minorities Commission on Monday ordered the Muzaffarpur district administration to register a case against police officials and land mafias for ransacking the house of Shia cleric Maulana Syed Mohammad Kazim and beating up with hockey sticks the cleric and his supporters on July 21, 2017, for raising voice against the illegal sale of Waqf lands of Nawab Mohammad Taqui Khan Waqf Estate and other waqf lands in Muzaffarpur district in Bihar.
Commission's Chairman Ghayurul Hassan Rizvi asked District Magistrate Dharmendra Kumar and Senior Superintendent of Police Vivek Kumar to file a detailed report in the case within a week.
The complainant, Bahadur Abbas Naqvi, alleged that the District Magistrate and the SSP tried to present a concocted version of the entire incident during the hearing at the Commission. Naqvi, secretary of Anjuman-e Haideri, produced the horrific videos of the assault before the commission members of which considered it as police excesses.
They also alleged the role of Shia Waqf board official Arif Raza in mobilising the land mafias against Maulana Syed Mohammad Kazim. The Commission asked the district administration to provide security to the family members of the cleric immediately.
Despite several attempts to elicit his version, the Muzaffarpur District Magistrate refused to make a comment. The Commission has decided to send a fact-finding team to Muzaffarpur.
