An Indian lawyer elected to the United Nations International law Commission (IlC) has become the youngest member ever to be made the Chairman of the Drafting Committee of IlC.
Thirty five-year old Aniruddha Rajput, who was elected to the Geneva-based IlC in January 2017, has earned this unique distinction, which is being conferred for the first time ever to a newly elected member of IlC.
The IlC usually chooses an experienced person who could either be a senior or a reelected member. “Appointing a newly elected member only goes to show the confidence the IlC has reposed in the Indian member,” those in the know of things said. He will serve a period of five years in the Committee.
The Drafting Committee of the IlC is tasked with development of international law and its codification. Rajput was selected as Chairman from among the 34 elected members of the UN body.
Rajput, a practicing lawyer in the Supreme Court of India prior to his international posting, is an alumnus of the london School of Economics and Political Science. He was a member of an expert group appointed by the law Commission of India to study and comment upon the Model Bilateral Investment Treaty 2015 of India.
